Google Earth vs NASA World Wind

Surely this is not a new topic. I’ve been asked this many times: which is better, Google Earth or NASA World Wind? (A more accurate question is, which do you prefer, Google Earth or NASA World Wind?)

This post doesn’t talk about my opinion at all. It does, however, show you some cool things about each of them. The “more” link is below the video(s).

You must understand, Google Earth is a MAPPING and geographical-studies software. NASA World Wind doesn’t do mapping. Google Earth does have that cool fly-in effect and the ability to generate videos…

Realize this: World Wind has even better imagery, courtesy of NASA, of course, and you can export it as higher-resolution files, something that you can’t do in Google Earth (free). NASA’s World Wind comes with imagery and software tools for other planets, like Mars and Venus, so there’s something you don’t see in Google Earth.

However, Google Earth is extremely beneficial for finding a location, or for viewing three-dimensional models of conceptual buildings. It’s fantastic for people like CNN that need international imagery all the time, though its quality just can’t match NASA’s.

Would you like to comment on which you prefer?
